How many shockwave sessions will I need?
Most patients see significant improvement after 6 sessions, each about 20 minutes and spaced about one week apart. That’s why a typical course at Adisi is 6 treatments. Many patients notice real change by sessions 3 to 4, with the best results after finishing the full protocol. Dr. Petzel builds your plan around your exam, how long you’ve had pain, and your goals.
Why does finishing the full course matter?
Shockwave works by stimulating your body’s own healing response: more blood flow, scar tissue breakdown, and new collagen in the tendon. That process builds over several visits. Research backs up giving it enough sessions. In a 2021 double-blind randomized study of 94 people with plantar fasciitis, a group that got 7 high-energy shockwave sessions improved more in pain, foot function, fatigue, and quality of life than a group that got only 3 sessions (Gezginaslan and Başar, Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, 2021; PubMed 33191061).
What does the $249 first visit include?
Your new patient evaluation is a single 45-minute visit that includes:
- A full health history review and exam
- Your first shockwave treatment, the same day
- A custom 6-session protocol built for your condition
No referral is required, and we often have same-week openings.
Is shockwave therapy covered by insurance?
At Adisi, shockwave is cash pay, so there are no insurance claims, no pre-authorizations, and no surprise bills. Chiropractic adjustments are in-network with BCBS PPO and billed separately, but shockwave, Class IV laser, EMTT, TECAR, and memberships are cash pay. Call us if you have questions about your coverage for chiropractic care.
Can I use my HSA or FSA for shockwave therapy?
Yes. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for all services at Adisi Health Center, including shockwave and memberships. Most of our patients pay this way. If you have FSA money left near the end of the year, it can be a good time to start treatment.
Is shockwave therapy worth the cost?
For many people with stubborn tendon or heel pain, shockwave is a way to try something powerful before surgery or injections. It has no needles, no medication, and no downtime, so you don’t lose time off work to recover. Research supports it as a real alternative for tough cases: in a randomized trial of 65 people with chronic heel pain that hadn’t responded to standard care, shockwave had a 12-month success rate of 70.6%, compared with 77.4% for endoscopic surgery, a difference that was not statistically significant (Radwan et al., International Orthopaedics, 2012; PubMed 22782376). What conditions does shockwave treat at Adisi?
Our shockwave page lists:
- Plantar fasciitis and heel spur pain
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Knee pain, including jumper’s knee, runner’s knee, and knee arthritis
- Shoulder pain, including calcific tendinitis, rotator cuff injuries, and frozen shoulder
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Chronic back pain
Is radial or focused shockwave more expensive?
No. A single session is $200 whether Dr. Petzel uses radial or focused shockwave, and the 6-session protocol combines both. Adisi has both Storz Medical radial and focused shockwave units on-site. Focused shockwave reaches deep tendon problems and calcium deposits, while radial shockwave covers a broader area for tight muscles and trigger points. Is there a way to heal faster?
Yes. Our wellness memberships are our most committed path to accelerated healing, for patients who want to get back to full strength faster. Both plans let you combine up to 4 therapies per visit, including shockwave, Class IV laser, EMTT, and TECAR:
- Recovery Membership: $1,299/month, 1 hour of therapy per week, up to 20 minutes of shockwave per week
- Premium: $2,199/month, 2 hours of therapy per week, 2 shockwave sessions per week
Memberships have a 3-month minimum and limited spots (15 Recovery and 5 Premium).
Who shouldn’t get shockwave therapy?
Shockwave is non-invasive, but it isn’t right for everyone. It may not be a good fit if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners
- Have an infection, open wound, or tumor in the treatment area
- Have a pacemaker or other implanted device near the treatment site
- Have had a cortisone shot in the area recently. You must wait at least 6 weeks after your last cortisone shot before starting shockwave.
Dr. Petzel reviews your health history before any treatment. Most patients feel only mild discomfort during a session; read does shockwave therapy hurt? for what to expect. We recommend avoiding high-impact activity for 24 to 48 hours after each session.
